What differentiates Microsoft Sharepoint from other similar products?
SharePoint sets itself apart through its deep integration with the platform of Microsoft 365. With its integration with Teams, OneDrive, and Office programs, SharePoint brings together one work environment that brings out productivity and collaboration at its best. Users can view and edit documents in Teams chat, map SharePoint libraries onto desktops via OneDrive, and work in real-time with Office documents stored in SharePoint, all without ever having to leave a convenient work environment.
What is your favorite aspect of this product?
Another standout feature of SharePoint is its workflows and automation feature. With native integration with Power Automate, SharePoint empowers its users to build sophisticated workflows for SharePoint business processes automation in a native manner. It could range from simple approval processes to sophisticated multi-step processes with many departments involved in them. Automated repetitive processes not only save time but even ensure uniformity in processes in a business. With integration with Power Apps, even custom forms and custom applications can be designed, and SharePoint can extend its role in business process automation.
What do you dislike most about this product?
The area of concern is performance in SharePoint, and specifically when dealing with high volumes of information, and complex site structures. Users have long grumbled about slow file library loads with high volumes of files, and when searching between numerous sites. In larger companies with widespread SharePoint implementations, over a period, a build-up of information can make performance suffer badly. There have been performance improvements in this direction, but SharePoint performance and responsiveness have been a challenge for many companies to maximize.
What recommendations would you give to someone considering this product?
For organizations that will utilize SharePoint, I urge them to make an investment in planning and governance at the start. Have a specific plan for SharePoint use in your organization, including site planning, naming conventions, and permission policies. Engage key stakeholders in departments to ensure that the platform will cover a range of requirements. Engage a SharePoint expert, a SharePoint consultant, or a Microsoft partner in planning and deploying a solution that covers your business requirements and leverages SharePoint capabilities.
